Commercial imports into Iran | Checks before committing to purchase and shipment

For imports into Iran, start the review with the exact goods. Collect the brand name, model, use, composition, origin and the proposed tariff line. Then, according to the procedure that applies to the file, enquire through official channels about the order registration status, the import permit, any specialist-agency permit and the foreign-currency requirements. The result of this check should be clear before you commit to a purchase and book transport.

Order registration and the clearance file

Keep the goods details, counterparty, quantity and value consistent between the pro forma invoice and the file documents. For example, if you are buying used machinery, write down the machine's condition, model and accompanying parts separately, and enquire whether that machine may be imported. Weigh the conditions and exceptions against the current rules of that procedure. Iran's integrated trade system · Islamic Republic of Iran Customs

Check the exporting country's rules and the payment route

In a transaction connected with Iran, check the parties, the end user, the goods, the shipping route and the banks involved before you act. In a case governed by US rules, check the current OFAC rules and licences that apply to that specific transaction. Before payment or shipment, match the result with your broker and a trade-compliance specialist in the relevant jurisdictions. Official OFAC reference on Iran sanctions

Match the file to the pro forma invoice before shipment

Ask the seller to state the model number, country of manufacture, quantity, unit value and transaction currency clearly on the pro forma invoice. Then check whether the goods are permitted and whether a specialist permit is needed, based on the tariff line and the type of procedure. If the quantity, seller, route, source of currency or model changes, ask the relevant authority whether the file must be amended. Plan shipping according to the validity of the documents and budget for the possible cost of goods being held.
